Microsoft Office Support on Windows 10 Ends in October: What You Need to Know

The countdown has begun for the end of support for several Microsoft products, and it’s not just Windows 10 that’s affected. Microsoft recently announced that support for Microsoft 365 apps (formerly known as Office) on Windows 10 will end on October 14, 2025. While there’s no need to panic, here’s what this change means and how you can prepare.

What Happens When Support Ends?

The end of support doesn’t mean Microsoft 365 apps will stop working immediately. After the October 2025 deadline, you can still use the apps on Windows 10. However, running Microsoft 365 or other Office products on an unsupported operating system could lead to performance issues, reliability concerns, and security risks over time.

  1. Performance and Reliability Concerns
Microsoft warns that using Microsoft 365 on an outdated OS like Windows 10 may result in unexpected glitches or degraded performance.
  2. Increased Security Vulnerabilities
Once support ends, Windows 10 will no longer receive security patches or updates. This means both the OS and Office apps will become more susceptible to cybersecurity threats and bugs.

Which Office Products Are Affected?

The end-of-support notice applies to both the subscription-based Microsoft 365 apps and standalone Office versions, including:

  • Office 2016
  • Office 2019
  • Office 2021
  • Office 2024

These changes impact popular versions such as Office Home & Student, Office Home & Business, and Office Professional Plus.

Why Upgrade to Windows 11?

Microsoft has been urging Windows 10 users to transition to Windows 11, citing improved security, enhanced features, and long-term support. However, upgrading isn’t always straightforward due to hardware requirements.

  1. Stringent System Requirements
Windows 11 requires devices to support features like Trusted Platform Module (TPM) 2.0, Secure Boot, and specific processors. Many older PCs don’t meet these requirements, leaving users with limited options.
  2. Options for Unsupported PCs
While it’s technically possible to install Windows 11 on unsupported hardware, Microsoft warns that such devices might not receive updates and could encounter compatibility issues.

Extended Security Updates for Windows 10

For those unable to upgrade immediately, Microsoft is offering Extended Security Updates (ESUs) as a temporary solution.

  • Individual Users: Pay $30 per year for extended security updates.
  • Organizations: Purchase up to three years of ESUs to continue using Windows 10 securely.

This, however, is a short-term fix. Eventually, moving to Windows 11—or purchasing a new PC—will become inevitable.

The Bottom Line

With the October 14, 2025, deadline approaching, it’s time to start planning your transition. Whether you upgrade your current device or invest in a new one, shifting to Windows 11 ensures that your system remains secure, up-to-date, and fully compatible with Microsoft 365 and Office apps.

Prepare early to avoid disruptions, and ensure your PC meets the requirements for a smooth upgrade to Windows 11.
