I Finally Found a 4K Projector to Replace My TV – Meet the Xgimi Horizon S Max

The search for the ultimate 4K projector has finally ended with the Xgimi Horizon S Max. It’s not only the brightest projector I’ve tested, but it also delivers an impressive combination of design, functionality, and immersive viewing. While it does come with some limitations, this projector is a solid contender for anyone looking to upgrade their home entertainment setup. Here’s why the Horizon S Max deserves your attention.

A Design That Shines

The Xgimi Horizon S Max features a built-in rotating stand, eliminating the need for a separate projector mount. Inspired by the JMGO N-series, this stand offers effortless screen placement adjustments — 135° vertically and 360° horizontally — and remains stable even under pressure. The stylish sliding lens cover not only protects the lens from dust but also adds a touch of elegance.

On the back, the connectivity options include two USB 2.0 ports, an HDMI (eARC) port, a power button, and heat vents. While the port selection is more minimal than the Horizon Ultra (which had an additional HDMI port, a 3.5mm audio jack, and Ethernet), it still suffices for most basic needs. However, the lack of a 3.5mm audio jack could be a drawback for those who prefer connecting traditional external speakers.

Brightness and Picture Quality

The Horizon S Max boasts a dual light source that pushes brightness to an impressive 3,100 lumens, outperforming its predecessor and competing models like the JMGO N1 Ultra. With a throw ratio of 1.2:1, it can project a screen size of up to 200 inches, delivering vivid, detailed images.

Even on challenging surfaces like a pink wall, the projector’s wall color adjustment feature maintains excellent picture quality. Additionally, it supports MEMC, Dolby Vision, and a game mode, ensuring smooth visuals, vibrant colors, and reduced latency for gaming enthusiasts.

Immersive Audio Experience

The Horizon S Max comes equipped with dual 12W drivers, which produce surprisingly robust sound for a small room. While the speakers are sufficient for most users, audiophiles may find the absence of a 3.5mm audio jack limiting. For enhanced sound, connecting a soundbar via HDMI is an option, but this compromises the already limited HDMI availability.

User Experience and Smart Features

Powered by Android TV 11, the software experience is smooth, with built-in Chromecast, Bluetooth 5.1, and WiFi 5 for connectivity. Setup is a breeze, requiring only minutes to pair the remote, log in to Google accounts, and install apps. However, occasional UI lags and the lack of quick-access buttons on the remote slightly detract from the overall experience.

One major downside is the lack of native Netflix support. While other brands like JMGO have addressed this issue, Xgimi still requires users to rely on streaming sticks for Netflix access, which might be a dealbreaker for some.

Final Verdict

Despite its shortcomings, the Xgimi Horizon S Max stands out as an excellent 4K projector. Its brilliant brightness, adaptive features, and sleek design make it an ideal choice for movie nights, gaming, or replacing your TV. If Netflix support isn’t a priority for you, this projector is well worth considering.

Upgrade your viewing experience with the Xgimi Horizon S Max — it’s a true powerhouse in the world of home entertainment.
